A designer and a builder, one accountable garden.
Fernline is a design-led landscaping studio working across the Northern Beaches. We have drawn and built gardens here since 2013, and the rule has never changed: get it right on paper, then build it once, properly.
Most bad gardens are not built badly. They are built without a plan. A landscaper turns up, prices a vague idea off the back of a quote form, and starts digging. The drainage is an afterthought, the retaining wall holds two metres of someone else's lawn on no engineering, and the planting is whatever was on the trailer that morning. A year later the lawn floods, the wall leans, and half the plants are dead. The owner paid twice: once for the work, once to fix it.
Hazel Brennan started Fernline in 2013 after a decade designing coastal gardens, because she was tired of being called in to redraw work that should have been drawn first. Joel, her partner and the licensed builder, had spent the same years rebuilding other people's failures. The studio they built together does the obvious thing the industry skips: it designs the whole garden on paper, costs it line by line, and only then builds it.
A garden fails on paper long before it fails in the ground. So we get the paper right.
Today Fernline covers design, full construction, decks and pergolas, retaining walls, native and coastal planting, garden makeovers, and grounds care for homes and strata across the Northern Beaches. There is no travel surcharge within 15km of Mona Vale, and anything beyond it is a named line on the proposal, never a surprise.
Three things we will not compromise on.
The itemised page vs the text-message price.
The drawing comes before the dig
Every Fernline garden is drawn to scale and signed off before a shovel moves. It is the only honest way to give you a fixed price and the only way a build lands on budget.
Named materials, named plants
Spotted gum, not "hardwood". Westringia, not "assorted natives". When the proposal names the timber, the stone and every species, nothing gets quietly substituted on site.
Drainage and footings first
The parts you never see are the parts that fail. We build drainage and engineered footings first, because a beautiful garden over bad ground is just an expensive problem waiting for winter.
We say no to the wrong job
If a refresh will serve you better than a rebuild, we say so and quote the smaller job. The honesty that costs us a sale today is what wins the next three.
Who we are right for.
Design-led gardens take a little longer and cost a little more up front. Here is who that suits.
Fernline is right for you if you want a garden designed properly and built to last, and you value an honest plan over the cheapest start date. We are not the right call if you need a mate with a trailer to tidy the yard by Saturday, and we will tell you so kindly rather than overcharge you for the wrong service. The owners who love working with us are the ones who want to see the drawing, understand the price, and never think about the wall again.

The NSW structural landscaping licence is the one that matters: it is a legal requirement for any landscaping work over $5,000, and it is what lets Fernline Landscapes & Design certify the decks, walls and drainage we build. On a live build these are the real, verifiable credentials of the business, and we are happy to hand over certificates of currency before a deposit.
A small crew, not a call centre.
Hazel Brennan
Landscape designer & co-owner
Degree-qualified landscape designer, fifteen years on coastal gardens, the last twelve on the Northern Beaches. Walks every block personally and draws every garden to scale before a quote goes out.
“A garden fails on paper long before it fails in the ground. So we get the paper right.”
Joel Brennan
Construction lead & licensed landscaper
Trade-qualified structural landscaper and the NSW licence holder. Runs every build from earthworks to handover, which is why the warranty runs five years and not one.
Mia Tran
Grounds care manager
Horticulturist who runs the maintenance and strata rounds. If Fernline built it, Mia's team keeps it looking like the photo from handover day.
What happens from first call to walk-through.
Design visit & measure
We walk the block with you, measure it properly, and talk budget honestly. How you live outside drives the design.
Design & itemised proposal
A scaled plan with structures, materials and a full planting schedule, priced line by line. You sign off the drawing, not a guess.
Build, staged and tidy
Earthworks, drainage, structures, then planting, in that order. The site is left safe and tidy every single evening.
Plant & hand over
Planting to the schedule, mulch, irrigation checks, then a walkthrough against the plan and a 12-week establishment guide.
Start with a design visit, not a brochure.
Tell us about your block. We walk it with you, talk budget honestly, and design the garden on paper before anyone digs.
